Depending on what I have noticed and browse in other sources, the oval (P) proof mark was not introduced until finally 1908. Previous to that point, Winchester marked “OF” (exterior fitted) on the bottom in the barrel under the forend inventory with the mail order barrels. I've see various of these on Model 1885 Single Shot Rifles that predate 1908.

The process by which Winchester barrels are created has designed them well known everywhere in the earth for his or her accuracy and power. Whenever a Winchester barrel is “rough” bored, as the very first dull is known as, it's proved for toughness, – tender metal barrels for black powder and minimal stress smokeless powders from the English Authorities evidence technique, and nickel steel barrels for smokeless powder with a procedure of smokeless powder proof. All barrels are proved with either of the above mentioned techniques except .22 caliber. The evidence is created as follows: A gentle metal barrel is locked to some firing desk, loaded using a demand of powder and direct 2 times as good as intended to be place in to the shell the barrel should be to be chambered Winchester shotgun models compared for, and fired.
