According to what I have observed and skim in other resources, the oval (P) evidence mark was not launched right up until 1908. Previous to that point, Winchester marked “OF” (exterior fitted) on the bottom in the barrel under the forend stock with the mail get barrels. I've see various of them on Model 1885 Single Shot Rifles that predate 1908.
